The Schwarzwald, as the Germans call it, is a paradise for nature lovers. Located 1.5 hours drive from Stuttgart or Zurich, it is home to many treasures. Tourists love to stroll through the alleys of Freiburg while others prefer to hike in the forest or enjoy a wine tasting in the vineyards of Baden. The Black Forest is also home to the famous mountain of Feldberg, with a peak at 1,493 meters above sea level. Snowy in winter, sunny in summer, it seduces by its climate and its original specifics. There are more than 1,000 kilometers of trails designed to appeal to hikers.
I created this little guide with the top 10 things to do in the Black Forest following my trip to the region during fall season. There are small little things that deserve to be seen! Are you ready ? Let’s go !
1. Spend a couple of days in Freiburg
What to do in the Black Forest when you want to enjoy a historic and authentic city? Let’s go to Freiburg. At the end of the day, eat at MarktHalle, there are specialties from around the world. Do not forget to visit little Venice on foot or by bike! It’s a very romantic place with nice buildings. Finally, go to admire the cathedral of Munster. The city is only 30 minutes from the border with France.
2. Visit the wineries of Bade-Wurtemberg
It’s a must to do in the Black Forest. The vineyards are only 30 minutes away from the city center of Freiburg. To have all the information about the wines of the region, I advise you to go to the Bercher-Schmidt winery. Ask for the wine grown on volcanic rock. Unbelievable ! The manager can also bring you to a truly magnificent point of view. It’s also by visiting the Abril Winery that we were lucky to have access to an incredible view of the vineyards of the region.
3. Stay 2 days at Best Western Hotel Hofgut Sternen
We stayed one night in the Best Western Hotel Hofgut Sternen in the Black Forest. With its pace of small mountain chalet, it has a pleasant and welcoming decoration. The dishes in the hotels restaurant are divine and the waiters are super cool! You are all ready for a waterfall and the main places to visit in the region.
4. Take a cooking lesson and prepare the Black Forest cake
It’s the flagship cake of the Black Forest region. He climbed the floors with a chocolate cake flavored with kirsch. To that, you add some cherries inside and especially a lot of whipped cream! It is delicious. The Best Western Hotel Hofgut Sternen offers you the opportunity to attend the preparation of the cake with the chef of the restaurant.
5. Enjoy the hot baths of Badeparadies Schwarzwald
This is one of the must-see places in the Black Forest. Plan to spend a day there. The baths are huge (60 000 square meters). There is something to relax for long hours. Hammam, sauna, UV, hot baths, cold baths, games for children, activities … be careful, in Germany no bathing suit in the saunas, so don’t be surprised. It is possible to rent towels at the entrance. There is also a restaurant and a bar in the main area. The ticket for the day is 27€.
6. Admire the reflects of the Titisee Lake
This is one of the landscapes of the Black Forest that I preferred during my stay. Lake Titisee is a pearl to visit. In summer, I advise you to take a walk in the flowery village before renting a canoe or pedal boat to walk on the lake for a few hours. In autumn, the colors of the fir trees is huge!
7. Eat at the restaurant of Schwarzwaldhof in Hinterzarten
This is the restaurant of my stay! You know that I like to share small culinary founds with you and it is beautiful and well there: the Schwarzwaldhof in Hinterzarten. With my friend Seynabou (a pearl also if you don’t follow it yet), we had a dish to share with a piece of beef tenderloin and seasonal vegetables. It was divine! The dishes are traditional, the decoration too and it feels good!
8. Hike at Felberg
What to do in the Black Forest when you love sport? Go hiking in Feldberg. It is the highest mountain in the region. Its summit rises to 1,493 meters and allows you to have a spectacular view of the surroundings. The trails are well defined and the ride is very nice. If you like to hike, you can also go to the Triberg waterfalls.
9. Listen the “coucous”
It is a must to do in the Black Forest. Cuckoos are born in the region. This traditional clock very often represents hunting scenes or mountain landscapes. You may see many houses in the area. Sometimes even, the clocks are gigantic.
10. A princess day at the castle of Hohenzollern
Located 50 kilometers south of Stuttgart, Hohenzollern Castle is an Imperial Prussian pearl. It is one of the most visited castles in Europe. Germany is the queen of castles. Besides, I will give you very soon some information about Eltz.
