——– (ENGLISH VERSION AFTER THE PICTURES)

Sri Lanka is one of the countries that we forget all the time when we think about Asia and you have to know it has many treasures that will leave you speechless! Ancient cities, heavenly beaches, tea mountains, waterfalls, national parks, elephants, leopard hidden at the top of a tree… Sri Lanka has everything. It’s very easy to get around, the VISA is obtained in a few minutes and it has become a country where traveling is no longer a problem, especially for the safety. I explain everything in this guide planned for a trip of 2 weeks! As always, the French version is up and the English version is here!

——– (FRENCH VERSION AT THE BEGINNING OF THE ARTICLE)

I created this guide taking into account all the questions you asked me. Regarding the itinerary, I propose a stay of 2 weeks, with optional steps. I tell you about transportation and unusual activities to do on site but also everything you have to prepare before to go.

BEFORE YOUR TRIP : PREPARATION

[tabgroup layout=”horizontal”]
[tab title=”Vaccinations“]

Doctors recommend these vaccinations:

  • hepatitis A (an injection should be made up to 15 days before departure),
  • typhoid (if you travel in precarious conditions).

Also check that you are up to date in your DTP: Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio. Finally, if you go for longer stays, he will recommend you to do the Hepatitis B vaccine.

[/tab]
[tab title=”VISA“]For a tourist trip less than 30 days, you will need an authorization, also called ETAElectronic Travel Authorization“. You can get it directly online on the website www.eta.gov.lk. This VISA is $ 30. It’s good to have your VISA before leaving and to pass immigration at the airport. You could pay more for your VISA at this point.[/tab]

[tab title=”Budget to travel around“]

  • Sri Lanka is for all budgets. What I mean by this is that if you are looking for a room in a pretty cool guesthouse at 15$ / night, you will find it. Don’t wait for a 10$ hostels either. Always check on Booking, otherwise you may have some surprises.
  • Transport: we rented a van for 12 days with a driver and it cost us 50$ per day. Count only a few dollars for bus and train journeys.
  • Finally for food, you will spend about 400 LKR (2$) for a typical curry and 900 LKR for a dish in an international restaurant. The beers are at 300 LKR and the cocktails are at 700 LKR. We were often tempted by a King Coconut at 150 LKR.

Also note that you often have to leave a tip of 10%, whether it’s for the driver, the restaurant or the employees of the hotel who carry you your luggages.

[/tab]
[tab title=”Little things to know“]There are many things to know before you go:

  • There are local SIM card at ridiculous prices when you arrive at the airport. We chose the operator DIALOG and we paid 1,500 LKR for 9 GB of internet, a few minutes of calls and SMS. For my part, I simply use the internet and use What’s App.
  • The currency used is the Sri Lankan rupee. 1 € = 188 LKR / 1 $ = 161 LKR. You won’t have any problem to withdraw money, there is a lot of ATM in the cities. Small tip: look over the shops, there is often a sign “MasterCard accepted“.
  • The 2 languages spoken are Sinhalese and Tamil. Don’t worry, Sri Lankans can speak English. It’s sometimes difficult to understand the accent, but you can do it. Learn how to say hello “aayu-bowan“, yes “owu“, no “naha“, please “karuna kara” and thank you “istuh-ti“. Locals love it when you try to speak Sinhalese.
  • Don’t be surprised to see cricket games during your walk in the cities. Indeed, it’s the sport of Sri Lanka. The children and the adults love it! In Pottuvil, close to the Lagoon and Pottuvil Point, there is a large place where locals meet for wild cricket games.

DURING YOUR TRIP

[tabgroup layout=”horizontal”]
[tab title=”Transports“]

  • Car: As I told you before, we chose the most comfortable option for our trip, but also the most expensive. For 12 days of renting a van with private driver, we paid 108 000 LKR (600$) + 10800 LKR of tip, a total of 118 000 LKR (625€). Here is the address and website of our driver : namalrathnayaka812@gmail.com / www.ceylonnamaltravels.com
  • . The kilometers are unlimited and the driver will take you wherever you want. On average, he drove 5 hours a day during the entire trip.
  • Bus: Be careful, the bus isn’t recommended by the guides. Indeed, they are crowded with locals and drivers are driving crazy. Nevertheless, you can make trips for less than 3$.
  • Train: The trains are great to see landscapes but you will lose a lot of time. Nevertheless, it doesn’t cost much and the big cities are very well connected.

Good to know: the distances in Sri Lanka don’t look very long at first, but you will quickly realize that there is a lot of traffic and the time of your trip may be doubled at the end. So…always plan more time for your trips.
